Skip buttons on opening cinematics. Fast travel unlocked in the first hour instead of the tenth. Difficulty items that let you switch the whole experience without restarting. Catch-up systems that hand a returning player most of what they missed. Across genres and budgets, the same instinct keeps showing up in modern design: work out where the interesting part of the game lives, then shorten the distance to it.
The good part moved to the front
For most of the medium’s history the interesting part was something you earned. Systems opened gradually, the best abilities arrived late, and the early hours functioned as a filter. That structure assumed a captive audience with time and no obvious alternative, which described the situation accurately for about three decades and describes almost nobody now.
What replaced it is a competition for the same forty minutes that a streaming episode, a podcast, or a scroll session also wants. Under that pressure, holding back the appealing content stopped looking like discipline and started looking like a leak. Studios responded with structural changes rather than cosmetic ones: skippable openings, save-anywhere, chapter select available from launch, seasonal content designed so a lapsed player can rejoin without a month of grinding.
Friction is measured now, not assumed
The bigger shift is that the drop-off is visible. Telemetry tells a studio precisely where players stop, on which encounter, in which minute, and the friction points that used to be defended as design intent get patched within a week of launch. When you can see the cliff, you build a staircase.
There is an obvious risk here, and good teams talk about it openly. A game made entirely of shortcuts has no destination. If every barrier collapses on contact, the moments meant to feel significant arrive without weight, and the player who has been given everything in the first hour has nothing to look forward to in the fifth. The craft is deciding which specific obstacle was ever doing useful work.
Instant access as a platform decision
Streaming services learned to open on a resume screen instead of a menu, music apps learned to start mid-playlist, and browser platforms built around sweepstake games learned to drop a visitor into a title with nothing to install and no account setup standing in the way.
The industry keeps rediscovering the same idea
Other corners of the sector have arrived at versions of this argument independently. Thodex’s write-up on blockchain gaming makes the case that decentralised systems shorten the distance between playing and holding something of value, with smart contracts automating prize distribution and in-game items carrying ownership recorded outside the publisher’s servers. Whether or not that particular architecture wins, the framing is worth noticing here, because it treats the delay between effort and reward as a defect to engineer away.
The same piece is honest about what those systems added back. Scalability limits, energy costs and a steep learning curve for anyone new to the technology are all listed as adoption barriers, alongside the need for simpler onboarding. A shortcut that requires a wallet, a seed phrase and a bridge is not a shortcut. It is a longer route wearing different clothes.
Accessibility got here first
The most rigorous version of this thinking came from accessibility work, years before mainstream design caught up. AbleGamers, the charity that has spent two decades on this, organises its Accessible Player Experiences patterns around three areas where players hit walls: Control, meaning the layout and precision a game demands; Presentation, meaning how information reaches the player visually, audibly and through touch; and Challenge, meaning the tasks required to progress. Developers take a sixteen-hour certification course to learn to spot them during production rather than after release.
Almost every feature that mainstream players now treat as standard started in that conversation. Full button remapping, subtitle sizing, colourblind palettes, adjustable timing windows, the option to hold a button instead of hammering it. None of these were built to make games shallower. They were built so that a barrier unrelated to the game’s actual challenge stopped excluding people, which turns out to be a decent description of what a well-placed shortcut does for everyone.
Hardware used to decide this for you
It helps to remember that the shortcut was once physically impossible. The Computer History Museum’s account of early consoles notes that the first home machines were locked into a small set of titles hard-wired into the electronics, usually Pong or something close to it, and that interchangeable cartridges only arrived with Fairchild’s Channel F in 1976. When the game is the circuitry, there is no skip button to add and no way to resume where you stopped. Design generosity was not a philosophy the industry rejected. It was a capability nobody had yet.
Where the shortcut stops helping
The honest version of this trend is that it has a limit, and the limit is not difficulty. Players will still sit through brutal games, long games and games that explain nothing, provided the difficulty is the point. What they will not sit through is administration: menus that exist to be navigated, tutorials that repeat what the last one said, loading between two rooms. Shortening those has cost the medium nothing. The question worth watching over the next few years is whether studios can keep telling the two apart, because the tooling that removes friction cannot tell you which friction was the game.
